We have another very interesting question to answer today. The vast majority of people who are switching to the LCHF way of life are doing so because of the lifestyle benefits, particularly in order to lose weight. We have however received this question quite a few times over the last few months. On today’s edition of the show we find out if it is possible to have a weight gain on the LCHF or banting diet.
It was initially thought unlikely, due to the benefits the diet has on cutting out a lot of the foods we shouldn’t be eating, namely processed foods. However in rare cases people are putting on weigh, on the low carb high fat diet. There are now cases where fat is stimulating as opposed to inhibiting people’s appetite, thus the weight gain.
The whole logic and proven practice behind the LCHF diet; is that transition from using carbohydrates to fats for energy, means you are less hungry less often. People who benefit the most from the diet will tell you as such. The reduction of carbs, which have a faster energy turnover, is the reason behind this, as fat and protein should keep you fuller for longer.
Weight gain & the LCHF diet
The opposite seems to be happening in these cases. Certain people seem to be able to binge on high fat foods. Fat is energy dense, so this is what causes the weight gain. The benefit for the LCHF diet, if working correctly, sees weight loss take place due to less calories being consumed. Unfortunately in these rare cases, this massive increase in fat eating, out weights the cutting of carbohydrates and these people put on weight.
If this is the case, you have one of two options. First you need to try reducing your fat intake and up your protein intake, while also making the effort to show restraint. If you are unable to do this, you will need to search for an alternative diet that is the right balance for you.
