Low-Carb Vegetarian Diets Can Work: Lessons from East Asia Offer a Viable Approach to Metabolic Health

Nutrition Network announced the launch of Low Carb for Vegetarians, a new training designed for practitioners and curious patients, developed in partnership with Metabolic Health India.

Low carb and ketogenic diets are historically centred firmly around animal protein, which can leave vegetarian clients underserved or pushed out of the metabolic health space. Millions of people worldwide eat vegetarian diets, whether for cultural, environmental, religious, ethical, or personal reasons, and many of them want the metabolic benefits of carbohydrate restriction without compromising their choices. Low Carb for Vegetarians was developed to serve this audience using evidence-backed lessons from the East.

Developed in partnership with Metabolic Health India’s Certified Nutrition Network Metabolic Health Coach, Shashikant Iyengar, the course walks health coaches, clinicians, and metabolic health practitioners through the real nuances and science of coaching a vegetarian client on a low carb diet: how to meet protein requirements without meat or fish, where eggs and dairy fit in where possible, and how to build a nutritionally complete, low carb vegetarian diet that clients can stick to.

There are many different reasons why someone chooses to be vegetarian, and as coaches and clinicians, Nutrition Network believes there is a responsibility to educate and support clients properly and safely, without asking them to compromise on their dietary choices. Low Carb for Vegetarians was developed with this in mind, giving practitioners the tools to do exactly that.

“We are very happy to offer this important aspect to the metabolic health space: many of our coaches and practitioners are faced with the treatment of health impacts of a poorly formulated vegetarian or vegan diet. We know that we can’t and don’t need to necessarily change food views, culture or choices. Our work is to support our community to help those from all dietary perspectives to work with their patients towards optimal health, which is metabolic health. I encourage anyone who has a strong view on this to listen and learn how to best serve this important community as part of their practice”, says Jayne Bullen, Managing Director.

Iyengar completed the Nutrition Network coach certification and has since become a close collaborator, developing lectures for the organisation and now taking on a role as a lecturer in the Coach Certification Programme. He is the founder of Metabolic Health India, a Metabolic Health Coach, educator, and researcher with over 35 years in healthcare, including leadership roles at Abbott and Pfizer. He reversed his own Type 2 diabetes in 2015 and has maintained normal glycaemic markers without medication for over a decade, a journey documented earlier this year in the peer-reviewed journal Frontiers in Nutrition.

“Millions of people around the world follow vegetarian diets, yet they are not immune to type 2 diabetes, obesity, fatty liver, hypertension and other metabolic disorders. Many want to improve their metabolic health without giving up dietary choices that may be deeply connected to their religion, culture, beliefs or personal values. This course was created to show that low-carbohydrate and ketogenic nutrition can be thoughtfully adapted to a vegetarian lifestyle, with particular attention to adequate protein, nutritional quality and individual needs.” says Shashikant Iyengar, Founder of Metabolic Health India®
